This blog has been inactive since the end of 2007. There is still a need for a gathering area such as this and it has been itching at my brain to get this started again.

So, to restart, I thought I would post some my music that I was actually making around the time this blog was active.  The album is called "Meme Theory" and you can download the whole album for FREE if you go to the site here. Enjoy.  More to come.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: 7a*11d International Performance Art Festival

This is the call for submissions for 7a*11d's 7th International Festival of Performance Art in 11 years, taking place in Toronto from October 22 ñ November 2, 2008. Organized by an unincorporated non-profit group of artists, 7a*11d presents a series of performance art events and artist projects in a festival setting. Our purpose is to offer a professional showcase for new and progressive performance
art works. Artist organizers will select emerging and established artists of the highest quality from around the world that showcase the breadth and depth of performance art as a genre. We pay artist fees and try to subsidize travel, but please note that our budget is limited and not adequate to support troupes or companies.

PLUS:
D2D Direct to Documentation: A video program of performance documentation. Can't come to the Festival? We still want to see your work! Send us an edited tape [five minutes or less on NTSCVHS, Hi-8,
mini-DV, CD or DVD] of your performance documentation or performance for camera. (No PAL or SECAM tapes, please!) Selected tapes will be curated into a screening program. Artist fees will be paid
for those selected for screening.

The fifth annual Radio Without Boundaries conference makes Deep Wireless
an internationally sought after destination for those with a general
interest in radio and transmission art or even those who just want
something more from radio.

Radio Roam by Eleanor King & Stephen Kelly
Radio Art Salon curated by Darren Copeland

Recline in an alternate sounding universe in 50's style hair salon
chairs transformed into radio art listening lounges. Running for the
entire month of May, the Radio Art Salon includes a program of radio
art works curated by Darren Copeland that includes contributions from
Resonance FM in the UK, from Kunstradio in Austria (sponsored by
the Austria Cultural Forum) and content drawn from the Deep Wireless
international call for submissions on the theme of Trans-X.

Radio Roam is a radio transmission installation work. It uses many
radios installed in the gallery space, each tuned to a different
frequency on the FM dial. A variable transmitter sends out an audio
signal and automatically changes the broadcasting frequency based on
motion activity within the space. The audio signal "jumps" from
one radio to another, creating a surround sound experience for the
gallery visitor. It is intended that the transmitted audio blend with
the bleed from other high power FM stations, to create an ever changing
collage of radio sounds, in real time.

Free VJing workshops offered in Prince Albert by Carrie Gates and Leeane Berger with Common Weal

VJing 101: An Introduction to VJing with Arkaos

Monday, April 23rd to Friday, April 27th 7:00 - 9:00pm,
at Prince Albert's St. Mary's High School computer science labs

Have you ever wondered how VJs create their artwork? Have you ever wanted to create a custom visual projection to work with a dance or theatre piece? Have you ever tried adding live visuals to a band's performance or a DJ set? We can show you how!

Using Arkaos VJing software, instructors Carrie Gates and Leeane Berger will guide you through a series of fun and focused workshops that will take you from recording and digitizing your own video footage to programming video mixing software to being ready for a live VJ performance.

Workshops take place in the evenings, from Monday, April 23rd to Friday, April 27th 7:00 - 9:00pm, at the St. Mary's High School computer science labs. Since there are limited seats, we ask that you send us a short letter or email by April 17th outlining why you would like to learn more about VJing. Let us know if you have any experience working with video, but beginners are also welcome. Up to ten participants will be selected for this free workshop offered by Common Weal Community Arts, Inc.

Carrie Gates – VJ Instructor
Carrie Gates' diverse art practices span the realms of VJing, experimental turntablism, sound art, sculpture, performance art, digital media, and the catylization of provocative interactive situations. Her work is unified by a pluralist vision and an appetite for teasing the uncanny from the familiar, critically yet playfully using and abusing any media she encounters. Recently, Gates has been working with creating innovative VJ performances using Max/MSP/Jitter and Arkaos software, sharing her findings with her peers through workshops and artist talks to encourage others to reclaim digital media as a tool for personal artistic expression and social change. Since 1996, she has been performing regularly at electronic music events, noise and experimental music shows, new media festivals, and art galleries. Her performances, compositions, videos, and research work have been shown across Canada as well as in Germany and the USA.

Leeane Berger – Assistant VJ Instructor
As part of a new generation of artists, Leeane Berger is currently working in the discovery, documentation and rediscovery of all things - great and small - that make up everyday living in Saskatchewan. In 2004 Leeane set out with a project to refurbish trash from alleys, sidewalks, parks and dumpsters. This endeavor propelled her into further exploration of salvaged and found materials. Leeane works in a variety of techniques and media in attempt to correlate viewer with surroundings. Using simple electronics to bring motion to a piñata television made from found electrical cords, wire and spray paint to the exploration of substance use in adding texture and depth to her found object paintings, Leeane is on a constant look out for new tools of expression. Working most recently in video, a medium she began working with while briefly attending Concordia University in 2005, has lead to experimentation with video mixing and animation. Her videos have since morphed from canadian video art inspired short-films into grungy expressionistic mixups for teasing and pleasing the eye.

VJ Theory - themed chats about critical theory, VJing, and realtime interaction

VJ Theory would like to invite you to participate on the discussion/
chats we are organizing.
This is a small project to invite our contributors, mailing list and
others to participate in the discussion of ideas and theories
informed by practice.

For this project, six of our contributors moderate six chats online.
Each chat last one hour and has as subject a specific theme within
the area of realtime interaction. There is one in the morning (10AM/
London) and another one in the evening (7PM/London), from the 4th
until the 6th of April.

This is our first experiment in hosting a debate useful for anyone
interested in the subject of realtime interaction. We asked a few of
the VJ Theory project contributors to moderate conversations online
in a chat room.
You are welcome to join and contribute with your ideas to these
conversations.

The resultant texts will be available after each chat through
vjtheory.net.

Guidewire Performances

So, I suppose this would be a little self promotion. I'll be putting on two performances in the next few weeks. There will be a show coming up on March the 31st at Neutral Ground art gallery in the Scarth St. Mall here in Regina. It'll be a 6 speaker digital audio performance involving various audio manipulation tricks and clicks.
The show starts at 8pm sharp.

Musings on Gallery Admission Fees

Saskatoon-based artist Ed Pas has been doing some very interesting writing about the status of the City's involvement with the proposed Mendel Art Gallery expansions and how art gallery admission fees might intersect with this.
